Hello! I'm Robin

I'm your typical disabled asexual amateur cryptozoologist & furry.
I know, a pretty strange combination. Oh, and I use they/them pronouns.
Feel free to contact me if you've seen a cryptid or know of a report. Or if you have any questions about furries or some other hyperfixation of mine. The fastest and easiest way is to DM me on discord. My ID is Robin_#1312. It's possible this might not work, so you can also contact me on Twitter, which is linked below.

If you stumbled upon this from discord, feel free to ask for music recommendations. Preferably tell me what kinds of music you like first to make it easier for me, of course...

Hyperfixations

I'm autistic and my main hyperfixation is cryptozoology, the study of cryptids. Cryptids are any species or population of animal whose existence or survival to the present day is disputed or unsubstantiated. A more in-depth definition would also include reports of animals that are too large or small for their generally accepted size limits. Cryptids can also include known species with minor differences, like a different coloured coat. Examples of cryptids are out-of-place big cats and lake monsters. My favourite cryptid, however, are sasquatches. If you've ever seen a cryptid or animal species that is absent from any field guide, please contact me and tell your story! That'd really make my day.Other hyperfixations of mine include:
Zoology, the study of animals
Ancient history, particularly the Pre-Columbian Americas
Anthropology (mostly uncontacted tribes and paleoanthropology)
any sort of Fortean/bizarre mysteries
And, of course, the furry fandom.

Music I like

I also like music, though I wouldn't consider it a hyperfixation. I mostly listen to rap, prog rock, and many kinds of folk music. Although I also like jazz, soul, funk, and Afrobeat. And my favourite band is Gorillaz. My top ten albums are presented here.1: The Rainbow Goblins - Masayoshi Takanaka
2: Demon Days - Gorillaz
3: Black Pumas - Black Pumas
4: The Much Much How How And I - Cosmo Sheldrake
5: Plastic Beach - Gorillaz
6: Spirit Phone - Lemon Demon
7: Clyde and The Milltailers - Clyde and The Milltailers
8: Dark Side of The Moon - Pink Floyd
9: Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest
10: Alone - Masayoshi Takanaka

A quick PSA

I'm a furry, which means I'm in the furry fandom. The furry fandom is a subculture that developed in the late '70s from LGBTQ+ communities, underground comics, and sci-fi and anime conventions. It's based mostly on anthropomorphic or humanized animal characters. Many furries have a fursona, essentially an avatar or caricature of yourself as an anthro character. My fursona is Patterson, a chubby, eccentric, nature-loving raccoon.I am putting this explanation here because of the misinformation about furries. It is not a fetish, nor do we think we're animals. Its primary appeal is the welcoming community and the chance to express yourself and your personality.

Furequently asked questions

This section is for answering common questions I've gotten about what a furry is. Also, some questions are for debunking common misconceptions or myths about furries.1: What is a furry?
A furry is someone in the furry fandom, which is actually more of a subculture. It developed in the late '70s from LGBTQ+ communities, underground comics, and sci-fi and anime conventions. It's based mostly on anthropomorphic or humanized animal characters. Many furries have a fursona, essentially an avatar or caricature of yourself as an anthro character. I'd define a furry as "Someone who is a fan of anthropomorphic animal characters and calls themselves a furry."

3: What is a fursona?
A fursona (a portmanteau of furry and persona) is an anthropomorphic animal character or avatar of an individual in the furry fandom. They’re typically caricatures or exaggerations of the individual’s personality and appearance. They’re also sometimes a more idealized version of the individual. It’s not necessarily a requirement for a furry to have a fursona per se, but it’s extremely important to interact with most of the fandom and a vast majority of furries have one.

2: Is it a sexual thing?
No, it’s not a sexual thing. That’s not even a fundamental part of the fandom for most furries, including me. There is a minority of furries where there is a major sexual aspect to it, but that’s not the majority and it’s pretty harmless.
The misconception likely comes from the fact that the fandom is about 80% LGBT and has been since the beginning of the fandom in the late 1970s, a time when homophobia was particularly rampant. Not to mention misleading or even completely untrue depictions of furries in the media.
And not to say there is absolutely zero erotic furry art. There is. Lots of it, in fact. But this is the case for pretty much any fanbase with millions of people in it. Especially a community based around expressing yourself. This still doesn’t mean it’s the main point of the fandom or even an integral one, but it definitely exists.
Personally, I don’t really care that there is NSFW furry art. I don’t enjoy it, but there’s no reason to be against something people enjoy if it doesn’t harm anyone or anything.

3: Why do you dress up in a fursuit?
Well, first of all, I don't. Most furries don't have fursuits. Either due to a lack of interest or just because they're expensive due to the cost of materials and all the time and effort it takes to make one.
Fursuits are typically costumes depicting the wearer's fursona or one of their characters. The appeal and purpose of it is to perform as your character essentially. Think of it as comparable to cosplaying but with your own character. Or similar to how people perform as drag queens.

3: What is the appeal?
Simply because it is a very fun way to express yourself and experiment with who you are and how you act.
Not to mention how genuinely kind, welcoming, and talented the community tends to be.
The welcoming nature of the fandom and the encouragement to express who you are is likely why it appeals to so many LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent people if I had to guess.
I'm not joking when I say this community has improved my mental health tenfold. It gave me new friends and relationships, the energy to reconnect with old ones, and the bravery to come out as non-binary and asexual to my family. I am extremely grateful.

More info

If you're curious about the history and development of the furry fandom I cannot recommend Ash Coyote's documentary The Fandom enough. It won several awards for a reason. It's extremely well-researched and edited, and quite heartwarming. It is free to watch on youtube.Another great resource is furscience.com, which is, hilariously enough, made by a team of actual psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists studying the fandom. The website has some fascinating surveys and research as well as resources for parents. If you have any questions about furries that weren't in the FAQ, feel free to contact me and ask away. I love talking about my interests and I'm very passionate about stopping misinformation and harassment against furries. Not to mention I just love talking about my hyperfixations.
